UNESCO in collaboration with the Government of Greece, the Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG), ITU, UN Women, OHCHR and other UN Agencies organized the first “International Development Cooperation Meeting on Gender and Media” from 7 to 8 December 2015 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva (Swiss Confederation). This meeting was followed by the first GAMAG General Assembly which took place from 9-10 December 2015 at the same location.
2015 is a turning point year for the global development agenda. Equality
for women and men will be fundamental to achieving the sustainable development
goals. In connection with the UNESCO Priority Gender Equality, the equal
participation of women and girl in media and communication technologies at the
leadership and content levels is indispensable for their empowerment, and can
support the acceleration of all other gender equality-related development
goals.
UNESCO has invited EducommunicAfrik and other
UN agencies, governments, private sector and international organizations to be
part of a discussion to establish a cooperation framework for GAMAG as a mechanism
to systemize support to gender, media and ICTs, a critical area of concern of
the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
